How we work out our prices

No guesses and no single magic number. Here is exactly where our cost ranges come from and how to use them.

Our five-step method

1
Collect real cost data

We read published contractor price lists, supplier prices for materials, government labor statistics and industry cost reports for each project.

2
Split labor and materials

We break every project into labor, materials, permits and extras, so you can see where the money goes.

3
Adjust for location

Labor rates and permit fees change by state and city. Each guide explains how much more or less to expect where you live.

4
Show a range, not one number

We give a low, typical and high price, and list what pushes a job to each end.

5
Re-check every month

Prices move with materials and labor markets. Every guide shows its "last checked" date.

What changes your price

Home size and access

Bigger, taller or hard-to-reach jobs take more labor.

Materials you choose

Basic, mid-range and premium materials can double the total.

Your state and city

Labor costs differ a lot across the USA.

Permits and surprises

Old wiring, rot or code upgrades add to the bill.

Our ranges are a starting point

Use them to plan your budget and judge quotes. Always get at least three written quotes from licensed, insured local contractors before you hire.
